Mouquet’s La Flûte de Pan — Myth and Nature in Sound

Jules Mouquet was a French composer active from the late 19th century into the early 20th century. One of his best-known works is La Flûte de Pan, a flute piece inspired by the Greek god Pan.

Composed in 1906, La Flûte de Pan consists of three movements. Through the sound of the flute, the work evokes a mythological world filled with pastoral landscapes, birdsong, and the dance-like presence of nymphs.

In this article, I would like to focus especially on the second movement, Pan et les oiseaux — “Pan and the Birds.” It is a poetic and atmospheric movement in which the voice of nature and the song of Pan seem to answer one another.

The structure of La Flûte de Pan

1. Pan et les bergers — Pan and the Shepherds

The first movement, Pan et les bergers, has a gentle and pastoral character. In Greek mythology, Pan is closely connected with shepherds, fields, and the natural world. This movement suggests an open landscape and a peaceful world of shepherds through bright and flowing music.

2. Pan et les oiseaux — Pan and the Birds

The second movement, Pan et les oiseaux, is characterized by figures that suggest birdsong and by a lyrical flute line that seems to sing within nature. The music unfolds as if the birds and Pan’s flute were in conversation.

Yet this movement is not only a simple picture of nature. There is also a sense of solitude and longing. If we think of the myth of Pan and Syrinx, the music may also suggest a memory of something lost, hidden behind the brightness of birdsong.

I also discuss the myth of Syrinx in my article on Debussy’s Syrinx.

3. Pan et les nymphes — Pan and the Nymphs

The third movement, Pan et les nymphes, has a lighter and more dance-like character. The music suggests the movement of nymphs and spirits of nature, creating a lively and graceful conclusion to the work.

Listening to the second movement: Pan et les oiseaux

At the beginning of the second movement, we hear musical figures that recall birdsong. The brightness and transparency of the flute’s upper register naturally suggest birds calling in the open air.

However, this movement is not merely light or decorative. In the middle section, the melody becomes more expressive, almost like an inner song of Pan himself. As the birdsong-like figures and the lyrical line overlap, the music gradually opens into a wider emotional landscape.

When performing this movement, one of the most important points is the contrast between the light, quick figures that suggest birdsong and the longer, singing phrases. Lightness and song, nature painting and inner expression — the beauty of this movement lies in the coexistence of these elements.

What to keep in mind when performing

In performing Pan et les oiseaux, it is not enough simply to play the notes accurately. The performer needs to feel what kind of scene, atmosphere, or emotion each musical gesture suggests.

  • Do the birdsong-like figures sound light and transparent?
  • Does the singing melody have a natural flow of breath?
  • Is there a sense of distance or longing behind the bright sound?
  • When played as a duet, do the two players share the same direction of tone color and phrasing?

Mouquet’s music combines the elegance of French music with a mythological, dreamlike atmosphere. In this second movement especially, the music describes nature while also suggesting Pan’s solitude and longing.

The voices of the birds seem to spread into the sky, while the sound of Pan’s flute gradually disappears into the distance. If performers can cherish this sense of resonance and fading sound, the poetic beauty of the movement becomes even more vivid.

Performance video

Here is a performance video of the second movement, Pan et les oiseaux, from Mouquet’s La Flûte de Pan. I hope you enjoy the poetic atmosphere in which the voices of the birds and Pan’s flute seem to speak to one another.
